About us
BSD India is a web page and a mailing list dedicated to helping out BSD users living in India or of Indian origin to get together and discuss BSD.

History
Arun Sharma had spent a large chunk of his time between 96-99 on Linux India and was a bit annoyed by the "radicalization" happening there (not that it was something new, but it was getting to him at that point). The time he spent on the BSD mailing lists was a refreshing change. Then one fine day he got the following mail:

P.S.: How about a bsd-india list ? :)

That day (20th December, 1999) he formed a mailing list and web page for BSD users in India with the objective of creating an online meeting place for like minded people to get together and discuss BSD.

There was no grand manifesto at that time, infact it was pretty much low key, the then webpage at http://www.sharma-home.net/bsd-india.old/bsd-india mentioned the following:

BSD India is a web page and a mailing list dedicated to helping out BSD users living in India or of Indian origin to get together and discuss BSD.

Specifically missing points were:
  • Goals of "spreading" BSD.
  • Freeing the world from Microsoft.
  • You're either with us or with Microsoft attitude.
Emphasis was on:
  • Technology comes first, open source, community building etc comes later.
  • Discussing the development methodology and processes that make BSDs so popular in some market segments.
  • Providing reassurance to people who like BSDs, but aren't moving because of the "if BSDs are so good, why isn't anybody using them ?" hurdle.
