I'm facing the same problem too.
The bigger problem is that although Kannada characters are rendered,  
it is not "collated" i.e. the letters appear individually and are not  
written like in real life.

"ma-na-su" will be shown as "m-aa-na-s-oo" (imagine kannada  
characters instead of english ones here).
