No attempts to develop Kannada language: LSS

bangalore: ``english is an indispensable language. but ensure that
kannada also grows.'' this is what prof l.s. seshagiri rao, recipient
of the central sahitya akademi award, has to say. exchanging views on
the status of kannada and english languages in karnataka, lss, as he
is popularly known in literary circles, says that with the advent of
computers, english language cannot be ignored. ``it is a key to
self-education. it is a library language which has to be taught to
students in a proper way.'' on the medium of instruction, seshagiri
rao is of the opinion that kannada should cope with the needs of
modern life. ``we do not have equivalent terms in kannada for
`computer' or even `awkward'. we have not made serious attempts to
develop the kannada language in a systematic and planned way. it is
shocking that there is no thesaurus in kannada. the kannada sahitya
parishat and kannada university should take up the responsibility of
developing kannada.'' lss is sad that children's literature is
completely neglected. ``children must experience the joy of reading.
we do not have books like alice in wonderland or cinderella . we have
to make some attempt in this direction.'' seshagiri rao calls for
revolutionising textbooks. ``texts should inculcate values of the
system that we have chosen. it is sad that the heritage of the
teacher-student relation is lost now.'' on the status of kannada
literature, lss feels, ``we are getting good kannada books, but there
is no movement and nothing exciting. kannada literature should acquire
a new dimension, because life has undergone tremendous changes with
the advent of information technology, a boom in employment and
recession. it is time for intellectual challenges and new moral issues
__ a writer has to respond to new ideas and challenges.''
